What is the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)?
The MTC is a statutory online test for Year 4 pupils in England which assesses their fluency with multiplication facts up to 12x12. The check consists of 25 multiplication questions at random and there is a 6 second time limit to answer each question.
What does times tables learning look like in school?
In school, the children practise their times tables every day in fun and engaging ways. The format of these sessions can change from day to day to keep learning exciting. We use a variety of tools and approaches to help the children learn through a multi-sensory experience. This includes online games and activities, paper-based tasks, hands-on practical resources, and even songs and rhymes. Sometimes we focus on one tricky fact or a specific times table, while at other times we practise recalling different facts at random to build speed and confidence.
How can I support my child at home with preparing for this check?
To help your child prepare for the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), we encourage regular use of Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS). The school has provided every child with their own login details — you’ll find these on the front of the letter in your child’s reading record. Using TTRS regularly helps to build confidence, improve fluency, and the children can earn certificates for their achievements!
Please also support your child in completing their weekly maths homework, which focuses on times tables practice. In addition, we’ve signposted some fun online games that can help further consolidate their learning in an enjoyable way.
Top Tips:
Keep practice short and fun — around 10 minutes a few times a week is perfect.
Look for everyday opportunities to practise — counting steps, playing dice games, counting and grouping objects and pattern spotting.
Offer lots of praise and encouragement to help build your child’s confidence and enjoyment of maths.
