English Overview

Intent

At St John’s, we strive to provide children with the tools to communicate through written and spoken language skills to be able to succeed across the curriculum and translate these skills to their future lives. It is our passion to provide children with an inspiring curriculum that nurtures and promotes a love of literacy.

We want children to acquire a wide and rich vocabulary, a solid understanding of grammar and be able to spell new words by effectively applying the spelling patterns and rules they learn. We believe that all good writers refine and edit their writing over time, so we want children to develop independence in being able to identify their own areas for improvement in all pieces of writing, editing their work effectively during and after the writing process and will learn to take pride in the presentation of their writing.  Children will learn to present their work to a range of audiences and adapt their writing style according to purpose and audience.

We believe reading is integral to a child’s understanding and appreciation of the world around them; a platform that allows our children to see beyond what they know, share in cultural experiences and develop the vocabulary they need to effectively express themselves.

Our reading curriculum strives to foster a lifelong love of reading and allows our teachers the freedom to devise programmes of study, which are accessible to all and maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement.

Above all, the children at St John’s will be provided with an English curriculum that places their knowledge and interests and the development of their futures at the core.
