Sport at St John's

SPORT AT ST JOHNS

Our goal is to inspire children to be lifelong participants in sport and physical activity. We want our children recognise that it should be part of our everyday lives to be physically active. We want our children to enjoy sport and have the fundamental skills needed so that they can access sports and physical activities competently and confidently.

We aim to achieve this through a combination of: completely inclusive quality PE lessons, good quality extra-curricular provision, intra-house and inter-school competitions and fostering a philosophy within our school that it is normal and enjoyable to be physically active every day.

In school, we aim to achieve this through:

 PE Lessons

We ensure that every child has the physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills to achieve in PE, sport and life. We use a child centred approach to ensure that there is suitable challenge and support for every child in every lesson.

The central philosophy of all lessons are built round three main principles:

1. Creating clear, shared learning journeys

2. Providing quality personalised opportunities

3. Shifting responsibility towards the learner.

Fundamental skills are taught in all lessons to increase physical literacy.

We also focus on other learning objective centres areas being taught – social, personal, cognitive, creative, health and fitness and applying physical skills.

Active Lunch Times

Our aim is to encourage children to enjoy physically active at lunchtimes. Our Playground Leaders organise and run fun activities to encourage enjoyable, physical activity. They provide activities on both the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 playgrounds every lunchtime. We have recently invested in in a new playground equipment shed, filled with a wide range of playground equipment including; colouring, building blocks, connect 4, body boards, skipping, throwing and catching, chalk, hula hoops, stilts. The equipment is rotated over the week allowing the children to access a full range of activities and experiences.

Extra-Curricular Sports Clubs

We employ a sports coach to deliver and enhance our extra-curricular club provision. We offer try to offer free club to all ages across the year, which are very popular. Clubs change throughout the year, they include multi skills, invasion games, netball, dance/gymnastics, athletics and summer sports.

As well as this staff help to run specialist clubs leading to fixtures against local schools. We are also looking to host and join local fixtures involving wellington schools throughout the year, also improving our links with local clubs and facilities.

Team Building

We have introduced team building activities to our PE program to further develop the children’s; problem solving, communication skills, leadership, and teamwork.  Children are encouraged to share ideas, brainstorm, learn through mistakes, try different approaches, and include everyone. Activities include blindfold exercises, trust challenges, tower building, stepping stones.

Intra-School House Competitions

There are regular competitions throughout the year in a range of sports. In KS2 we look at the end of each term, as part of the PE lessons, to compete in the each half terms activity with competitive matches or tournaments. Including, netball, hockey, tag rugby, tennis, cricket, athletics.

 Inter-School Activities

The school takes part in inter-school festivals, hosted and run by our sports leaders. This has a dual purpose, providing each year group with a suitably challenged set of fun games and challenges, whilst also developing the older sports leader’s organisations, communication and leaderships skills.

 Additional opportunities

The school are always looking for additional opportunities to access, giving the children as many experiences across as many sports as possible. Over last year we have had;

  • Somerset cricket providing coaching for KS2.
  • We have had tennis provided by an external coaching company.
  •  We’ve sent pupils to try fishing at Summerhayes, Bridgwater.
  • Wellington Netball Club will introduction netball to KS1 students.
  • Yeovil Sports Trust will be offering football sessions across the school.
